"Nashuan finds comfort in choir during cancer treatment"

“I think I knew that I’d get through it because it was so early, but I was so shocked to even know that I had breast cancer that the disease itself kind of overshadowed any concerns about how it would turn out,” Bartol said.

One constant, however, throughout her illness and treatment was singing. Bartol is a member of New England Voices in Harmony, and singing made a real difference for her at that time and each day now as well.

“No matter how tired, how sad or frustrated – whatever feelings I was having – I would pick myself up and go to rehearsal, and by the end of the night, I would feel happy, free, lighter,” Bartol said. “I’d be with my sisters in harmony.”

Is Nashua big enough for two barbershop choruses? You bet it is.

But for Borsari, performing is only part of the reason she joined Voices in Harmony. "There's also a wonderful sense of sisterhood, of camaraderie," she explained. "It goes deeper than the music."

In addition to directing Voices in Harmony with Tramack, Borsari is part of Synchronicity, an award-winning quartet within the chorus. The four women - Liane Iannuzzo, Jeanne Swanson, Kathleen Macdonald and Borsari - practice...
